Fueled by countless gatherings and a trail of shattered glasses, Benson Liu and Michael Fun embarked on a mission – to create a superior alternative to disposable cups.
Their brainstorming sessions, fueled by (hopefully unspilled) drinks, led to the birth of Tossware.
Liu, with his background in plastics manufacturing, and Fun, a marketing whiz, were the perfect duo. They saw a gap in the market – a lack of stylish, reusable drinkware that wouldn’t shatter at the slightest bump.
But functionality wasn’t enough. Sustainability was paramount. They envisioned a product that was kind to the environment, starkly contrasting to the ever-growing mountain of single-use plastic cups.
The journey wasn’t easy. It took over 20 iterations before they landed on the perfect design – a cup that offered a comfortable sipping experience and a sophisticated look, all while maintaining a shatterproof nature.
Their patented “Pop ‘n Lock” feature ensured secure stacking, adding a touch of innovation to their functional design.
But the magic wasn’t just in the shape. The material selection held equal importance. Committed to sustainability from the get-go, Liu and Fun prioritized using recycled materials for their plastic products.
Their “POP” collection, the answer to flimsy disposable cups, utilizes a blend that includes post-consumer recycled plastic water bottles.
“We source the highest grade of recycled material,” explains Liu, “made from reclaimed water bottles. It has to be food-grade to keep it pristine and mimic that classic glass look.”
Their ambition doesn’t stop there. Tossware is on a quest to become a fully circular manufacturer by 2025, meaning their plastic products will be crafted entirely from recycled water bottles.
It’s a testament to their dedication to environmental responsibility, aiming to “use the best-quality material, the most innovative process, and deliver the best product at an affordable price,” as Fun emphasizes.
But Tossware isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Recognizing the diverse needs of their customers, they’ve expanded beyond their original “POP” collection.
The “Reserve” line caters to those seeking the ultimate in durability, featuring dishwasher-safe, non-toxic, and heat-resistant cups made from heavy-duty Tritan plastic.
For eco-conscious consumers with a preference for chilled beverages, the “Natural” line offers plant-based, compostable options.
The success of Tossware speaks volumes. Many of their initial product testers, who received cups nearly a decade ago, are still using them today.
This commitment to quality and sustainability has resonated with consumers, making them a leader in the reusable drinkware revolution.
So next time you’re hosting a gathering, raise a glass (or, rather, a Tossware cup) to a company that’s as stylish as it is sustainable.
